Games break at the account layer far more often than at the game itself. Sign-in, entitlement checks, matchmaking, and stores are separate online services, and any of them can fail while the game runs perfectly. The most confusing version of this is a digital title refusing to launch because the console or launcher cannot verify a licence, even though the game is fully installed and nothing is wrong with it.

Two consequences follow. Offline and single-player usually keep working during an outage, so being unable to play at all normally points at authentication rather than game servers. And publishers with several titles share one identity system, so a single sign-in incident blocks an entire catalogue at once while a per-title problem affects only one.

Multiplayer is also sharded by region, so an incident routinely affects one shard while others queue and play normally. A single global verdict cannot capture that, and the publisher's own per-region page is worth checking.

Common questions about games and gaming platforms

Probably a partial or regional incident. Authentication and matchmaking are usually sharded, so one region or one shard can be failing while others are fine. Check whether you can reach the store or your profile: if those work and only matchmaking fails, the problem is narrower than a full outage.
