An internet provider going down is the one outage that hides every other outage. When the connection itself fails, every site looks broken at once, which is the clearest signal that the problem is upstream of anything you were trying to reach.
Provider incidents are also unusually local. A fault affecting one metro area is invisible nationally, so a national status check often shows green while a whole neighbourhood is offline. The provider's own outage map, keyed to your address, tells you more than any external check can.
Common questions about internet providers
These outages are usually regional, and a national status page reports the network as a whole. A fault affecting one area does not move a national indicator, which is why the address-level outage map is the more useful check.
Test on mobile data. If sites load there and not on your connection, the fault is your line or your provider. If they fail on both, the site itself is the problem.
